You don’t even have to know the first thing about skiing before you get to the resort – all the knowledge you will need is there waiting for you, and you can literally ski on a mountain after an hour of instruction.
Learning to ski is really quite easy. Most resorts have an on-site ski school, and lessons are reasonably priced. Group and private lessons are generally available. It is however a good idea to make an appointment before you arrive at the complex. This will allow you to start learning to ski from the first seconds of your vacation.
Most of the ski instructors start by showing you how to maneuver with your equipment. When you wear ski boots, you will be tilted slightly forward – there is a reason for that … when you go down a mountain, you will be tilted forward! Walking with ski boots the first time is a bit difficult – but it works great if you can learn to walk with your knees bent slightly.
The first thing to learn is called the plow, or snow plow. It is a technique that is done by literally using your skis as a snow plow. You slow the back of the skis out, away from your body by applying pressure – and that stops you. You guide yourself in the sky by bending your knees and leaning in one direction or another, depending on the direction you want to take. All of these methods can be learned in an hour, even if you’ve never been on a pair of skis in your life.
The beauty of skiing is that after you’ve learned to snow plow and guide yourself on skis, you’re ready to ski! Take the elevator, climb the mountain and try it out.
