Switzerland

Switzerland is expensive, and that's the wrong first objection. The country is so small that you can live in one place and reach everything, and the trains make the car unnecessary — both of which pull the math the other way.

In winter, the choice is unparalleled. Skiing in Switzerland gives you the overview, St. Moritz is where winter tourism was literally invented in 1864, and Zermatt and Cervinia share the same mountain across two countries, so you can have lunch in Italy and drive back to Switzerland. Andermatt is the most uncompromising skiing, and Lenzerheide is where families come back to.

In the summer it becomes a different country. Summer holidays in Switzerland are all about the lakes and the network of chalets, and the Maloja Pass is one of those drives that can last a week alone.

If it had to be packed down to a list, the best travel destinations in Switzerland would take into account both cantons and seasons.
