Egypt: The popular holiday resort with sun all year
Hardly any country is so strongly associated with one type of attraction as is the case with Egypt and the Pyramids. Along with the statue of the fabled sphinx, which originates from Egyptian as well as Greek mythology, the pyramids are one of the world's most iconic tourist destinations.
The mystery of how to build them, what is hiding in the tombs, and why the Egyptians for approx. 4500 years ago was able to construct a stone structure, which today stands as the last of the Seven Wonders of the Old World. Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt has reached the hearts of many Danes. The flight is affordable. 🛂 Visa and entry
- Visa: Danes must have a visa — either an e-visa (approx. 30 USD via visa2egypt.gov.eg) or a visa on arrival (approx. 30 USD). This allows stays of up to 30 days.
- Sinai exception: If you are only traveling to Sinai's beach resorts (Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab), a free stamp upon arrival may be enough — but it does not cover, for example, a trip to the pyramids.
- Not: valid for at least 6 months.
💰 Currency and money
- Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP).
- Payment: Cards are accepted in hotels and in cities; have plenty of cash in small bills.
- Tipping (baksheesh) is a permanent part of the culture — expect to tip a little for everything from luggage assistance to guides.
🚗 Transport, time and health
- Flight time from Denmark: approx. 5 hours (direct flights to Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh).
- Around: domestic flights to Luxor and Aswan; a Nile cruise is a classic, and trains connect the major cities.
- Best travel time: October–April (comfortable); summer is very hot.
- Time zone: +1 hour compared to Danish winter time.
- Language: Arabic; English is spoken in tourist areas.
- Health: no mandatory vaccines, but hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended; be careful with food and water — drink bottled water.
- Security: Follow the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice.
