Syros is a Greek island in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. (see map below) It is located 144 km south-east of Athens. The island, which has approx. 35.000 inhabitants, are divided into the municipalities of Ermoupoli, Ano Syros and Poseidonia.
Syrah, or Syros, has the largest population among the Cyclades. It is the 11th largest island in the Cyclades, with a size of about 24 square kilometers and a maximum length of 22,5 km. Its position is central among the Cyclades. It is a mountainous island with small valleys and high mountain peaks.
What are Cyclades?
The Cyclades are a large group of islands in the Aegean Sea with around 220 islands. The largest are Ándros, Ios, Kéa, Kythnos, Mílos , Mykonos , Náxos, Páros, Serifos, Syros, Tínos and Santorini.
How many islands are there in Greece
You often see the number about 2500 Greek islands, but Greece actually consists of between 1.200 and 6.000 islands, depending on how you define an island. The 227 are inhabited with Crete in the south as the largest and Evia as the second largest, only separated from the mainland by the narrow strait Euripus Strait. Some of the islands are located close to Turkey in the Dodecanese archipelago with Rhodes , Kos and Karpathos as the largest and best known to Scandinavian tourists who have visited the islands since the 1960s.
