In the footsteps of Gauguin and Brel on Hiva Oa

The island of Hiva Oa is the cultural hub of the archipelago. It was here that the French painter Paul Gauguin spent his final years of life. Fed up with Western society, he sought Hiva Oa to find the ultimate artistic freedom. He settled in the village of Atuona in his famous House of Joy (House of Pleasure) and painted some of his most iconic works until his death in 1903.

Today you can visit the Gauguin Museum in Atuona and walk up to the beautiful Calvaire Cemetery on the hillside where Gauguin is buried. Just a few meters away you will also find the legendary Belgian singer Jacques Brel , who also fell in love with the island's tranquility and made Hiva Oa his final home.

Day 1: Arrival in Nuku Hiva & Taiohae Bay
