Albania – a country with a lot of new things to offer for Danes who are used to traveling
Albania was a very closed country for a long time. From World War II until his death in 1985, the communist dictator Enver Hoxha ruled the country with a heavy hand. The dictatorship fell in 1992. Although traces of the old regime can still be seen in the form of abandoned military bunkers and monuments, the country has decisively begun its journey towards the future. It is exciting to visit a country that has been isolated for so long and is now opening its window to the outside world.
Albania and the Mediterranean
Albania's Mediterranean Coast
Although the country has beautiful nature inland with high snow-capped mountains, it is the Mediterranean coast that attracts.
The Albanian Riviera, a beautiful part of the Mediterranean coast
The southern part of Albania's beautiful coastline from Dhermi and further south is synonymous with the Albanian Riviera. Here is Saranda, to which several Danish travel agencies provide trips.
Along the Albanian Riviera you will find some of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see on the Mediterranean. Everything from small private and pristine lagoons to long perfect classic beaches with that lazy lapping sound when the sea hits the shore, pure meditation and a beach bar is always close by.
Summer Ksamil beach, Albania, sea and beach
Saranda and Ksamil
Popular Saranda is the Riviera's most well-known holiday destination. Almost in the middle of the city you will find a pearl of a beach. A white beach with clear water. Sarandë (locally spelled Sarandë) is a city and municipality in southern Albania, with a population of about 20.000. The city is part of the Qark Vlora district. Sarandë is located on the shores of the Ionian Sea, opposite the Greek island of Corfu
Ksamil Beach is just a short bus ride from Saranda and is one of the most popular beaches in the area, offering a long, almost endless stretch of white sand.
There are three small islands in the bay. You can just sail there by boat. On the beach you can rent sun loungers and parasols in classic Italian style. You can also windsurf etc.
On the road to Ksamil lies the small, relatively unknown beach Pulebardha. If you want peace and quiet, this is the beach for you.
Durres, Albania's longest beach on the Mediterranean
Durres Riviera
At the port city of Durres you will find Albania's longest beach, which stretches almost 10 kilometers south. The long and wide beach with soft white sand is shallow and child-friendly. Here there are sun loungers and parasols below the many hotels and a wide range of water sports. Along the beach there is a pleasant promenade.
Albania, stunning mountains are part of the travel experience
Excursions and historical cities and sights in Albania
Albania's nature is characterized by high mountains and sparkling waterfalls. Around the quiet mountain villages, the shepherds' everyday life is as it always has been. And going around the villages is like going on a journey back in time. The Blue Eye spring, the archaeological site of Butrint and the historic city of Gjirokastër are excursion destinations, all of which are exciting and different. From Durres you can visit the capital Tirana, cross the land border to Macedonia at Lake Ohrid or take a boat trip to the city of Vlora.
Cheap restaurant visits in Albania
Albanian cuisine is influenced by Italian, Greek and Turkish cuisine as well as local specialties. Restaurants serve everything from seafood and risotto to local dishes and pierogi. The national drink is called Raki and is a type of brandy. In Albania, it is cheap to go out to a restaurant, expect half the price compared to back home.
