South Sudan as a new country – Brief introduction

Where is South Sudan located?

The world's youngest country, South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. A civil war that broke out in 2013 has killed more than 50.000 people and displaced more than 4 million people from their homes.

South Sudan is located in eastern Africa and borders Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Uganda and Kenya to the south, and the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The capital is Juba. It is one of the world's youngest countries and is generally considered unsafe for entry.

Why is there uncertainty?

South Sudan has been plagued by unrest and internal conflict since its independence in 2011, making it one of the least visited countries in the world. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and most travel companies advise against travel to large parts of the country due to security risks (2025 status).

When South Sudan overcomes the terrible crisis

Unique culture: You will meet some of the world's most traditional tribal people, such as the Dinka, Mundari and Nuer.
Wild nature: You will be able to experience large swamp areas (Sudd), national parks, and the second largest animal migration area in Africa.

The food in the country

The cuisine is simple and local. Expect dishes with corn porridge (posho), beans, roasted meat (often goat or beef), and fish from the rivers. In Juba, there are few restaurants with international food.
